Purchase Music

Most music purchases with Rhapsody are done on the fly when you burn a CD or transfer to a portable player or device.

Add music from the Music Guide or My Library to Burn a CD in the Sources area, and when you start the CD burning process, you will be prompted to purchase any tracks you do not yet own. Transferring music to a portable device ( ) works the same way. (However, downloaded Rhapsody tracks are free to transfer with the appropriate membership and a compatible portable device.) You can also purchase music directly from the Music Guide or My Library without burning or transferring (see below).

How does it work?

Burnview of the Display area

If you have added streamed (process of breaking a large audio or video file into smaller pieces and transferring it, piece by piece, so it can be viewed immediately rather than waiting for the whole file to be downloaded) or downloaded Rhapsody tracks to Burn a CD in the Sources area, you will be prompted to purchase them when you begin the CD burning process.

Transferview of the Display area

If you have added streamed or downloaded Rhapsody tracks to a portable device ( ) in the Sources area, and you do not have the appropriate Rhapsody membership and a compatible  portable device to allow subscription content (tracks that have been downloaded but not purchased), you will be prompted to purchase the tracks when you begin the transfer process.

The Purchase Bin

If you have marked tracks to purchase later on your Rhapsody MP3 Player, they will be waiting in the Purchase Bin in the Sources area. () Click the Purchase Bin to view the tracks you have saved there. Choose to buy any, all, or none of the tracks.

My Library or
Now Playing

You can purchase Rhapsody tracks from My Library or Now Playing. Select the track or tracks you wish to purchase, right-click and select Buy Track(s).

Rhapsody Music Guide

Click Buy. If you aren't signed in, or have used up all of your free streams for the month from your Rhapsody-Free membership, you can still purchase tracks and albums listed in the Music Guide with the Buy button.

The music that's available for purchase is constantly being updated, so check the Music Guide often for changes. You can also get updates about your favorite artists on your My Rhapsody page in the Music Guide.

If you buy a track and it does not download successfully, Rhapsody will keep a record of the transaction and prompt you to finish the download. Select My Account > Manage My Account:Re-Download Tracks in the Rhapsody menus.

Where is the music I purchase from Rhapsody stored?

Music purchased from Rhapsody is downloaded and saved in the default music folder on your computer (selected in My Library preferences). Tracks are automatically added to My Library once they have been downloaded.

What happens to my purchased tracks if I end my membership?

The Rhapsody tracks that you purchase are yours to keep, even if you choose to end your paid Rhapsody membership.

Streamed (large audio or video file that is broken into smaller pieces and transferred from a server piece by piece, so it can be viewed immediately rather than waiting for the whole file to be downloaded) and downloaded (but not purchased) Rhapsody tracks are "membership" tracks. When you end your paid Rhapsody membership, any streamed or downloaded tracks you have in My Library will no longer play.

Note:  Music purchased from Rhapsody is content-protected, and downloaded Rhapsody files will not play on non-RealNetworks players. However, Rhapsody music burned to CD can be played in any CD player, and you can transfer and play purchased tracks on a variety of portable music players.
