Playlists: Playlists You Create

Playlists are groups of tracks that Rhapsody will play in sequence. Think of a playlist as a virtual album. Create a playlist for any mood, such as "Cool Jazz" or "Pick Me Up," or for any occasion, such as "Dinner Music for Two."

Share Rhapsody playlists with your friends, or publish your playlists to the Playlist Central online community and share your music with the world.

In addition to the playlists you create, Rhapsody can also create three types of special playlists.

  • Click any playlist name to view or edit it in the Display area.

  • Drag and drop tracks and albums from My Library, the Music Guide, or another playlist to any playlist name to add those tracks to the playlist.

    Note:
You cannot drag tracks to a Dynamic Playlist ( ), or an AutoPlaylist ( ).

  • Drag and drop a playlist to Burn CD in the Sources area to add it to a burn queue.

  • Drag and drop a playlist to a portable device ( ) in the Sources area to transfer the playlist to the device.

    Note:
If your portable device supports playlist transfer, the playlist will be transferred as a whole. If your device does not support playlist transfer, the playlist will be transferred as individual tracks.

Tell me more about the different types of playlists.

There are four kinds of playlists in Rhapsody. There are the playlists you create yourself, but Rhapsody can also create three special kinds of playlists:AutoPlaylists, Dynamic Playlists, and My Dynamic Playlist.

Playlist Type

How Does it Work?

Playlists created by you

The playlists you create share the following characteristics:

  • All playlists are accessible in the Playlists area (under the Sources area.)

  • Playlists can contain up to 800 tracks.

  • Playlists take up very little space on your hard drive. Each playlist is simply a list of shortcuts to media files and internet links.

  • You can create playlists using tracks in any supported file format.

AutoPlaylists

An AutoPlaylist is a playlist created from music in My Library and  based on rules that you select. Once created, an AutoPlaylist can be played like an ordinary playlist.

Unlike an ordinary playlist, AutoPlaylists are just collections of rules used to generate a list. Every time you add or remove tracks from My Library, the AutoPlaylist will change (if the tracks match any of the rules in the AutoPlaylist).

To save an AutoPlaylist as a normal playlist:

  1. Clear the current contents of Now Playing.

  2. Drag and drop the AutoPlaylist from the Playlists area to Now Playing.

  3. Click Save as Playlist at the top of the Now Playing window.

The AutoPlaylist will not be affected, and will continue to change as you add and remove tracks from My Library. The new playlist will stay the same until you edit it.

Note: Search results for an AutoPlaylist are based on the information included in the Track Info.

Dynamic playlists

Dynamic playlists are created by Rhapsody, and their content is updated each time you sign in to your Rhapsody account. You can get My Dynamic playlist based on your listening history and preferences, or you play and add Dynamic playlists from the Dynamic playlists page in Playlist Central. Every time you sign in to your Rhapsody account, your Dynamic playlist will be updated with fresh content.

Every time you attach your Rhapsody MP3 Player to your computer while signed in to Rhapsody, the Dynamic playlists on your device will automatically update as well.

Since Dynamic playlists change all the time, you may lose some tracks from a Dynamic playlist that you really wanted to keep. To avoid this, be sure to drag and drop any tracks you want to save to My Library.

To save a Dynamic playlist as a normal playlist:

  1. Clear the current contents of Now Playing.

  2. Drag and drop the Dynamic playlist from the Playlists area to Now Playing.

  3. Click Save as Playlist at the top of the Now Playing window.

The Dynamic playlist itself will continue to change every time you sign in, but the new playlist you have created will stay the same until you edit it.

My Dynamic Playlist

My Dynamic Playlist is a playlist based on your recent listening history, and genres you select in My Rhapsody. You can find My Dynamic Playlist on the main My Rhapsody page.

If you wish to save My Dynamic Playlist as a normal playlist:

  1. Clear the current contents of Now Playing.

  2. Click at the top of the Instant playlist to add it to Now Playing.

  3. Click Save as Playlist at the top of the Now Playing window.

The new playlist can be shared, as it is made up entirely of Rhapsody tracks.

If you wish to subscribe to your Dynamic Playlist, click at the top of My Dynamic Playlist on the My Rhapsody page. Your new playlist ( ) will appear in the Playlists area.  This is a Dynamic playlist; every time you sign in to your Rhapsody account, you'll get fresh tracks.

What can I do with a playlist?

There are many things you can do with a playlist other than simply playing it.

Action

How Does it Work?

Edit

Edit the tracks in your playlist. You can rearrange track order, and delete or add tracks at any time.

Note:
You cannot directly edit an AutoPlaylist, you must edit the AutoPlaylist rules. You cannot edit  a Dynamic playlist, but you can save it as a regular playlist and then edit it.

Burn

Burn a playlist to CD (provided that the tracks in the playlist are all available for burning, and that the total playing time of the playlist will fit on the CD).

Note:
You can burn any particular playlist made of purchased tracks up to seven (7) times.

Transfer

Transfer a playlist to a portable player or device ( ), if your device supports playlist transfer. (If it does not, the playlist will be transferred as individual tracks.)

Share

Share playlists made from Rhapsody tracks by adding a playlist link to your blog (web log; online diary or log kept on a web site), e-mailing or instant messaging a link to a friend, or publishing playlists to Playlist Central, an online Rhapsody community.

Save to My Library

Drag a playlist from the Playlists area to My Library ( ) in the Sources area to add the tracks to My Library.

Note: You must have the appropriate membership to add downloaded Rhapsody  tracks to My Library.

What is Playlist Central?

Playlist Central is an online Rhapsody community. Click the  Playlist Central tab at the top of the Music Guide pages to navigate to Playlist Central.

In Playlist Central you can browse, rate, and share hundreds of playlists posted by other Rhapsody users, as well as special playlists created by Rhapsody staff.

Publish your own playlists to Playlist Central for your friends and music lovers everywhere to share, or add other users' playlists to your collection in the Playlists area.

You can also visit the Dynamic playlists page from Playlist Central. Subscribe to playlists that will refresh their tracks each time you sign in to your Rhapsody account. Both Playlist Central and Dynamic playlists are excellent ways to discover new music.

Note: You must have the appropriatemembership to add playlists to My Library from Playlist Central.

What is the difference between Rhapsody playlists and local playlists?

A Rhapsody playlist contains only streamed, downloaded, and purchased Rhapsody tracks.

Local (computer resources such as drives or files that are part of a computer, or available on a Local Area Network; music files located on your computer's hard drive(s) are referred to as "local.") playlists contain one or more local, non-Rhapsody track.

Tell me about playlists and My Library.

Playlists you add to the Playlists area are not automatically added or downloaded to My Library.

To  add the tracks from a playlist to My Library, drag the playlist from the Playlist area to My Library in the Sources area. You can also drag single tracks or groups of tracks from the Playlist view of the Display area to My Library.

Once you have added the tracks to My Library, downloading will automatically begin if you have Download tracks to my hard drive... selected in My Library Preferences.

Note: You must have the appropriate subscription to add streamed (process of breaking a large audio or video file into smaller pieces and transferring it, piece by piece, so it can be viewed immediately rather than waiting for the whole file to be downloaded) and downloaded Rhapsody  tracks to My Library.

Tracks deleted from playlists will not be deleted from My Library.
