Portable Players: Formats and Transferring

You can transfer a mix of formats, file types (for example, MP3, RA, RAX, M4P), and qualities (such as 96 kilobytes per second [Kbps], or 196 Kbps) to your portable player or device. Rhapsody will automatically try to convert incompatible files into a format that your portable device can use. File conversion preferences are selected with the Configure Device or Change Options commands, depending on the device installed, but will only be used if your device does not support the original file format.

See Track Types for more detailed information.

Streamed Subscription Tracks

Streamed subscription tracks cannot be transferred to a portable player or device unless they are downloaded, and they cannot be burned to a CD unless they are purchased.

If you add streamed subscription tracks to the Transfer view of the Mixer for Manual Transfer, the "Purchase" dialog will open when you initiate transfer; or, with the appropriate subscription and a compatible portable device, the tracks will automatically be downloaded as subscription downloads.

Streamed subscription tracks will never be downloaded or purchased during Library Sync. Only the local contents of My Library will be transferred during synchronization.

Downloaded Subscription Tracks

When you download subscription tracks (on Windows XP or later), you are granted the rights to use them with your Rhapsody player (on or offline), and, with the appropriate subscription, to transfer to and play them on a supported portable device. (Supported devices must be Janus, or "PlaysForSure," compatible.)

Note: Not all subscription downloads can be transferred to a portable player or device. Some artists and labels have not granted subscription transfer rights to their tracks. If you attempt to transfer a subscription download that does not have transfer rights, the "Purchase" dialog will open.

Purchased Tracks

Purchased tracks (from Rhapsody, Real Player, or any other music store) can be transferred to any device that supports RA, AAC, MP3, or WMA formats or burned to a CD.

Imported

(No icon) Local files that have been Imported from a CD or downloaded from the internet and saved to your hard drive (but not purchased from Rhapsody's Music Guide) can be transferred to any device that supports RA, AAC, MP3, or WMA formats.

Note: Imported CD tracks are automatically added to My Library as local tracks. Non-Rhapsody downloads must be imported into My Library using the Rhapsody File Menu.
