Synchronize Portable Devices

From the Portable Device view of the Display Area, you can choose to synchronize the contents of My Library with your portable player or device.

In your Sync Options, you can choose to either add the contents of My Library to your device without deleting any files from the device, or to overwrite the contents of the device (music files only) with the contents of My Library. You can also choose to copy only selected playlists to your device.

Note: Only your purchased, imported (from CD or your local drives), and subscription download (if available with your subscription level and hardware) tracks will be synchronized. Unlike a manual transfer, Sync will not initiate a download or the "Purchase" dialog. Download or purchase any tracks you wish to synchronize before you begin.

Warning: If you select Overwrite the contents of the device... in your Synchronization preferences, all existing audio files on your portable device will be deleted, and the contents of My Library copied to it. Other existing content, such as photos and video files,  will not be deleted when you click Sync.

The Difference Between Library Sync and Manual Transfer

You initiate the Library Sync process from the Portable Device view of the Display Area. In your Synchronization Preferences, you can choose to transfer the entire local contents of My Library, including playlists, to your portable device. You can choose to replace the contents of your portable device with My Library, wiping the device clean of music files before you synchronize, or you can choose to just add the contents of My Library to your device. You have the option of transferring only selected playlists, if you wish. The streaming contents of My Library will not be downloaded or transferred.

Note: Some portable devices will not delete playlists, though the associated tracks will be removed, leaving you with empty playlists on your device. To delete them, use your device menus or switch to mass storage mode and manually delete the empty playlists using your computer.

With Manual Transfer, you add tracks you wish to transfer to your portable device to the Transfer view of the Mixer yourself, and initiate the transfer process. Any available streaming tracks you add will initiate the "Purchase" dialog, or, with the appropriate hardware and subscription, automatically download. Any playlists you add to Transfer will be transferred as individual tracks, not as a playlist. See the chart below for quick reference.
