Playlists are groups of tracks that Rhapsody will play in sequence. Think of a playlist as a virtual album. Create a playlist for any mood, such as "Cool Jazz" or "Pick Me Up," or for any occasion, such as "Dinner Music for Two."

Share Rhapsody playlists with your friends by e-mail, post a link to a playlist on your web site or blog, send a link with your instant messaging program, or publish your playlists to the Playlist Central online community and share your music with the world.

Types of Playlists

There are three kinds of playlists in Rhapsody. Rhapsody Playlists are playlists that you create yourself. Rhapsody can also create two special kinds of playlists: Instant Playlists and My New Tracks.

Playlist

Description

Rhapsody Playlists

Rhapsody Playlists share the following characteristics:

  • All playlists are accessible in the Source List under My Playlists ( ).

  • Playlists can contain up to 800 tracks.

  • Playlists take up very little space on your hard drive. Each playlist is simply a list of shortcuts to media files and internet links.

  • You can create playlists using tracks in any supported file format.

Instant Playlist

An Instant Playlist is a playlist based on your recent listening history. You can generate an Instant Playlist from the Music Guide home page, or from My Rhapsody.

If you wish to save an Instant Playlist as a normal playlist, click at the top of the Instant Playlist. Your new playlist will  appear in the Source List.

The new playlist will be online ( ) (See Online vs. Local Playlists, below) and can be shared, as it is made up entirely of Rhapsody tracks.

My New Tracks

The My New Tracks playlist ( ) is automatically generated from the most recently added contents of My Library. It appears in the Source List. The My New Tracks list changes every time you add tracks to My Library.

You cannot edit the contents of My New Tracks. If you wish to save My New Tracks at any point, first clear the contents of the Mixer by clicking Clear All. Then drag My New Tracks from the Source List to the Mixer, and click Save.

What Can You Do with a Playlist?

There are many things you can do with a playlist other than simply playing it.

Action

Description

Edit

Edit the tracks in your playlist. You can rearrange track order, and delete or add tracks at any time.

Burn

Burn a playlist to CD (provided that you have the rights to burn all of the tracks in the playlist, and that the total playing time of the playlist will fit on the CD).

Note:
You can burn any particular playlist made of purchased tracks up to seven (7) times.

Transfer

Transfer a playlist to a portable player or device during Library sync.

Share

Share online playlists (playlists made from Rhapsody tracks only) by adding them to your blog, e-mailing or instant messaging them to a friend, or publishing them to Playlist Central, an online Rhapsody community.

Save to My Library

Drag a playlist from My Playlists ( ) to My Library ( ) in the Source List to add the tracks to My Library.

Note: You must have the appropriate subscription to add subscription tracks to My Library.

Playlist Central

Playlist Central is an online Rhapsody community. Click at the top of the Music Guide to navigate to Playlist Central.

In Playlist Central you can browse, rate, and share hundreds of playlists posted by other Rhapsody users, as well as special playlists created by Rhapsody staff.

Publish your own playlists to Playlist Central for your friends and music lovers everywhere to share, or add other users' playlists to your collection in My Playlists in the Source List.

Note: You must have the appropriate subscription to add playlists to My Playlists from Playlist Central.

Online vs. Local Playlists

Online (Rhapsody tracks only) playlists are available on any computer that you use to sign in to your Rhapsody service. Local playlists are not.

Online playlists contain only Rhapsody subscription ( , ) and purchased ( ) tracks. These playlists can be shared and will be available to you wherever you sign in to Rhapsody, as they are made up entirely of Rhapsody tracks.

Local playlists contain one or more local, non-Rhapsody tracks and cannot be shared.

Playlists and My Library

Playlists added from Playlist Central, shared e-mails, or web links allow you to sample a wide range of music before you add it to My Library. Playlists are added to My Playlists ( ) without downloading tracks to your hard drive as subscription downloads, even if you have Download songs to my hard drive... selected in your Preferences.

To add the tracks from a playlist to My Library, drag the playlist from My Playlists ( ) to My Library ( ) in the Source List. You can also drag single tracks or groups of tracks from the Playlist View in the Display Area to My Library. Once you have added the tracks to My Library, downloading will automatically begin if you have Download songs to my hard drive... selected in your My Library Preferences.

Note: You must have the appropriate subscription to add subscription tracks to My Library.

Playlists created from the tracks in My Library become part of My Playlists. Tracks deleted from these playlists will not be deleted from My Library.
