Preferences: Content: Media Types

This Preferences window lists the media types that RealPlayer can play, and shows which types it will play by default. A check mark next to a media type indicates that RealPlayer is the default player for that media type. Click Advanced to view media type details and to change your existing defaults. (The Advanced selections are particularly useful after you have installed other programs that play some of the same media types.)

For Example: You have selected MP3 files to be played by default by the RealPlayer. When you double-click any MP3 file from a local file folder, or select an MP3 file from a web page, RealPlayer will open (if it is not open already) and start playing the file automatically.

Note: Media Types preferences will not be available if you are logged onto Windows (2000, ME, XP) as a guest or another limited user. To change these preferences you must have an administrative-level account.

Note: RealNetworks is constantly working to expand the abilities of RealPlayer; as you add plug-ins to RealPlayer the list of supported media types will change.

Attention: When you select this preference page, RealPlayer will take several moments to determine what Media Types are supported and whether they are selected.
